Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras are used to read the registration plates of vehicles passing through the CCTV Cameras field of vision, even in the vehicle is moving. This can be used to log vehicles entering or exiting a specific area, or when linked to a barrier system, can be used to open gates and barriers to pre-authorised vehicles.

ANPR CCTV Cameras differ from standard CCTV cameras by using a process known as Optical Character Recognition, or OCR. OCR is software that runs on your CCTV System in harmony with the ANPR CCTV Camera.

Where a regular camera will process an image as a whole, an ANPR camera will analyse the pixels within the image, and ‘decide’ if those pixels form a character or not. This process will happen multiple times as a vehicle approaches to eliminate any errors. This data is then logged, and can be used for reporting purposes, or referenced within a database to trigger a response – such as a barrier opening, or alerting security.
